Free 11+ and 13+ diagnostic test

Published by Hearthprep

Hearthprep's free 11+ and 13+ diagnostic test deals 12 entrance-exam questions, 4 per subject, and marks them instantly online with no account, card or email. The result shows a score, a band and the subject to practise first. At 11+ it covers Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning; at 13+ it covers Maths, English and Physics. It takes about fifteen minutes.

If you are looking for a free 11 plus diagnostic test online, this is one: sat in the browser, drawn from the same question bank as Hearthprep's interactive past papers, and marked by the same grader. It also runs at 13+ — the eleven plus is not the only entry point, and the two levels draw on different subjects.

Start the test

Pick the level your child is preparing for. Twelve questions, about fifteen minutes, marked at the end.

A short sample gives a rough read, not a formal assessment — we say so plainly on the result page too. The baseline runs at these two levels because they're the ones our bank can span three subjects at; Hearthprep also covers 7+ and 16+ in practice and past papers.

What does the free diagnostic test cover?

The test deals 12 questions at the level you pick — 4 from each of 3 subjects. At 11+ the subjects are Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning; At 13+ the subjects are Maths, English and Physics. Every question comes from the same bank that powers Hearthprep's interactive past papers, and every one is objectively markable — no essay questions, so no part of the result depends on a human marker's judgement.

How long does the test take?

About fifteen minutes in one sitting. There are 12 questions, most children spend a minute or so on each, and there is no timer — the point is an honest read of where a child stands, not speed under pressure. Skipping is allowed, and an unanswered question is simply marked wrong rather than ignored.

What does the result show?

A score out of 12, a band — Building the basics, Developing, Secure and Strong — and accuracy in each subject, with the weakest subject named as the one to practise first. It is deliberately not an age score or a percentile: 12 questions cannot support one, and we would rather say so than invent precision. The result appears on the page the moment the last question is answered; having it emailed as well is optional.

Is the diagnostic genuinely free?

Yes. The test needs no account, no card and no email: pick a level, answer the questions and the marked result appears on the page. Hearthprep's past-paper PDFs are also free to download. The paid part of the site is the answer keys and step-by-step worked solutions to those papers, which sit inside a subscription — the diagnostic is not a trial that expires, it is simply free.

Should my child sit the 11+ or the 13+ test?

Pick the exam the child will actually sit. The eleven plus (11+) is taken in Year 6, at age ten or eleven, for entry to grammar schools and independent senior schools at Year 7. The 13+ is taken in Year 8, usually for Common Entrance or a school's own Year 9 entry papers. A Year 5 child preparing early should still sit the 11+ test, which draws on real 11+ material. Hearthprep also covers 7+ and 16+ in practice and past papers; the diagnostic runs at the two levels the question bank can span three subjects at.

How accurate is a 12-question diagnostic?

Accurate enough to say where to start; not accurate enough to plan a syllabus. 4 questions per subject give a rough read on relative strength — which subject is behind the others — but cannot diagnose individual topics. For that, a free Hearthprep account unlocks a fuller diagnostic report once a child has answered ten practice questions: strengths, focus areas and a four-week plan, also free.

Can my child retake the test?

Yes, as often as is useful. Each sitting deals a fresh random set from the question bank, so a retake is a new test rather than the same 12 questions again. A useful pattern is to sit it once before starting practice and again a few weeks in — the band and the by-subject split make progress visible.

After the diagnostic

The result names the subject to practise first — the next step is to practise it against real papers. Every past-paper PDF on Hearthprep downloads free with no account; instant marking and step-by-step worked solutions sit inside a subscription with a free 7-day trial.
